It's pretty easy once you know your settings and you're prepared - before it's pitch dark.
Set your camera's ISO or sensitivity to it's highest, let's say 6400. Use your widest angle lens, at its widest aperture, an 11mm lens at f-4. Expose for about 20 to 30 seconds. Longer exposures increase the chance for star movement. Plan to brighten your image afterwards in a photo editor.
